Environment

At Cimento Nacional, we prioritize environmental responsibility in all our operations.

Our practices center on effective biodiversity management, responsible use of natural resources, and a commitment to the circular economy. We continually strive to reduce atmospheric emissions and lessen the environmental impact of our activities.

We conduct systematic monitoring across all our units to ensure regulatory compliance and drive continuous improvements in our processes and products, always with the goal of preserving natural resources.

Waste Management

Through our Solid Waste Management Plan (PGRS), we enforce stringent waste management practices in alignment with the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS).

We collect waste selectively and ensure proper disposal of all waste generated in our facilities, maximizing material reuse.

Industrial and office waste is separated at the source, stored in waste centers, and subsequently sent for recycling, reuse, destruction, or treatment. More than 50% of this waste is recycled or reused, under strict supervision and processing by licensed companies.

Co-processing is a sustainable practice that converts industrial solid waste into fuel for cement kilns. It helps reduce CO₂ emissions and minimize landfill waste.

Over 245,000 tons of waste are co-processed each year at our facilities.

Reforestation & Land Restoration

Since 2010, we have planted native tree seedlings to reforest and recover degraded land. In 2023 alone, 3,807 seedlings were planted to restore pastureland and compensate for vegetation removed in mining operations.

Each species is monitored for five years to promote healthy forest growth. Additionally, vegetation buffers are kept at property boundaries to lessen the visual impact of operations.

Water Reuse

We have adopted water reuse practices across our operations, recognizing the importance of this vital resource. Closed-loop water systems encourage efficient reuse while avoiding waste. Rainwater harvesting systems contribute to water conservation. Sanitary wastewater is treated and reused, guaranteeing an environmentally friendly and sustainable process.

Co-Processing

At Cimento Nacional, we prioritize sustainability and embrace co-processing as a key strategy for environmental preservation. Co-processing involves the thermal destruction of industrial and urban waste in clinker kilns, providing a sustainable method for final disposal without creating new waste.

How Co-Processing Works

Step 1

Industrial and urban waste from multiple sources is gathered.

Step 2

Our laboratories test the waste to ensure it meets the necessary safety and quality standards.

Step 3

Approved waste is temporarily held in designated warehouses at our factories.

Step 4

The waste is then processed in clinker kilns, which thermally eliminate it, substituting for raw materials or fuels.

ADVANTAGES OF CO-PROCESSING

  • CO₂ Reduction

    Reduced carbon dioxide emissions.

  • Preservation of Natural Resources

Decreased consumption of non-renewable fuels and raw materials.

  • Sustainable Waste Disposal

Final disposal that does not create ash or residue.

  • Landfill Reduction

Reduced waste ending up in landfills.

  • Public Health Benefits

Eliminating used tires helps prevent mosquito-borne diseases.

  • Boosting the Circular Economy

Minimized dependence on natural resources in manufacturing processes.

2023 Performance

Cimento Nacional’s thermal fuel replacement rate reached 30.9%, resulting in a 2.8% decrease in fossil fuel consumption compared to 2022.

In total, over 245,000 tons of alternative fuels were co-processed.
